When it comes to architecture and interior design, Art Nouveau architecture attempted to defy convention by constructing “complete works of the arts”, in which all of the parts worked in unison within a unified aesthetic language. Before and during World War One, Art Nouveau was criticized for its ostentatious ornamentation. While the movement did not survive the First World War , parts of it may be seen in subsequent trends like Art Deco, Modernism, and even the Bauhaus school of architecture. Sexual overtones typically permeated Art Nouveau images of women in posters, paintings, and sculptures.
